No joke — America Apparel is giving away five free clothing items with every purchase of $10 or more today, Apr. 1, 2011, only. The only catch is that you have to pick the five free items from a list of 50, which is not bad at all.

The free items include belts, scrunchies, tank tops, T-shirts, thongs, bras, belts, pantyhose, zip-ups, a ski mask, and shirts that proclaim “Legalize L.A.” Expect sizes to be limited and the best items to go quickly. See the entire list of free items at American Apparel. You pay shipping.

To get your five free items, put one item costing $10 or more in your cart, then add five items marked in yellow with the words “FREE WITH CODE APRIL1ST.” It’s unclear if you can get multiples of the same item, or if you have to get five different free items. Get a free water bottle from Victoria’s Secret when you log in or register this week for PINK Nation, a sub-brand of the lingerie chain, and buy any PINK item in the store. Offer ends April 11, 2011. Your log-in for Victoria’s Secret won’t work, unfortunately. Click on the link above, then click on the words JOIN in blue on the left side of the screen.

Enter your name, address, and email to sign up. You can opt into receiving PINK Nation’s email and texts if you choose. The form also asks for your birth date, college (PINK is geared towards students), graduation date, and your top and bottom sizes — but this information is not required to join. I received an email confirmation within minutes, which had a link to print the coupon for a free water bottle.

The coupon will have your name on it and a cashier may ask you for ID to verify.

Caveats: Online, catalog, and factory outlet purchases are not valid for the free water bottle. One per person while supplies last. Valid at U.S. stores only. Photocopies not accepted.

Judge Denies Proposed Settlement of DirectBuy Class-Action Suit

A Connecticut federal judge has rejected as “meager” the proposed settlement of a nationwide, class-action lawsuit against DirectBuy Inc. for fraudulent pricing practices.

“The court cannot conclude that this settlement falls within the range of reasonableness,” U.S. District Judge Janet C. Hall said yesterday in a written opinion.

Judge Hall explained her decision by noting that the proposed settlement called for DirectBuy to provide free memberships worth some $3,000 each to approximately 800,000 class members.

“The best possible recovery…may amount to well over $2 billion,” Judge Hall wrote. “In light of this best possible recovery, the Settlement Agreement — which the court has calculated as being worth, at most, between $15 million and $27 million — appears quite small.”

Sending a new college student off to school with a computer is so time-honored, I myself — some 20 summers ago — was gifted with a new computer (a Tandy desktop). I think it cost about $1,000 in 1991 dollars and stayed with me through four years of school, a double major and a 72-page honors thesis.

These days, computers cost a lot less in nominal dollars, are way, way cheaper in real dollars, and, if you purchase one that costs at least $699 between May 22 and September 3, 2011, from a participating retailer with a student ID or an .edu email address, you’ll get a free Xbox 360 in the bargain. (If you don’t want the Xbox 360, you can get 10% off your purchase instead — a substantially less valuable perk unless your chosen computer is high end, indeed.)

I love Aveeno lotion, so I’m curious about this free sample of Aveeno shampoo and conditioner that is available while supplies last. Is Aveeno shampoo and conditioner any good?

To find out, answer three questions about your hair, then share your name, address, email, gender and date of birth to get the free sample. You can choose from a formula for color-treated hair, a formula for damaged hair or grab a free Aveeno sample to add volume or shine. I wish there was one for frizzy hair.

By submitting the request form, you agree to receive emails and snail mail from Aveeno and its parent company, Johnson & Johnson. You can always unsubscribe from the emails. Stopping the snail mail may be more difficult. The free sample of Aveeno shampoo and conditioner will arrive in 8-10 weeks.
